United States Army Specialist Michael Gaynor III is a veteran well deserving of a special act of kindness. Born in Tacoma, Washington, and raised in New York, Michael's journey is marked by both his dedication to service and personal challenges continues to endure. During the course of duty, he suffered serious wounds that have left him paraplegic. Currently residing temporarily in Manhattan for work, he looks forward to the creation of a fully accessible smart home in upstate New York, a space designed to enhance his independence and quality of life, thanks to the generous support of Stockings for a Cause.
Michael's early years were filled with a love for the outdoors, sports, and music. "I grew up playing sports, guitar, and spending time in nature. Whether it was fishing, hiking, or camping, I always felt most alive outside," he recalls. His passion for adventure and camaraderie was a natural fit for his decision to enlist in the Army in 2008, following in the footsteps of his father and grandfather. "I wanted to be part of something bigger than myself," he shares.
As a soldier in the 3rd Brigade Combat Team, Michael was involved in a humvee rollover, suffering serious wounds that have left him paraplegic.
As a soldier in the 3rd Brigade Combat Team, Second Infantry Division, Michael experienced the brotherhood and structure that the military offers. However, his journey took a dramatic turn during his deployment to Iraq when he was involved in a humvee rollover. The incident left him with severe injuries, including a severed spine, broken ribs, collapsed lungs, a ruptured spleen, a concussion, and a broken shoulder. "The recovery was long and grueling," he admits, "but I learned to find strength in my vulnerability."
Fourteen years after his injuries, Michael remains committed to outpatient care and advocates for others facing similar hardships. His resilience is evident in his active involvement with the Wounded Warrior Program and Veterans of Foreign Wars. He also plays a pivotal role in the wheelchair sports federation, helping disabled athletes thrive in competitive sports. "Being able to assist others in finding joy in sports is incredibly fulfilling," he expresses.
In addition to his advocacy, Michael is in the process of starting a paralyzed Veterans chapter in New York. "My experience has shown me that we can support each other and create a community where everyone feels included," he emphasizes. This commitment to service is fueled by Michael’s belief that there is always hope, no matter the circumstances. "Life will throw challenges your way, but there's still life to live and fun to be had," he states. "The more we come together through family, friends, and community, the happier and more enjoyable life can be, even amid pain."
As he looks forward to moving into his future smart home, Michael is excited about the possibilities it will bring. "Having a space designed for accessibility will make everyday tasks much easier and more manageable," he explains. With a newfound purpose, Michael is eager to continue helping others while pursuing his dreams. In a world where challenges can feel overwhelming, SPC Michael Gaynor III reminds us that resilience, community, and a positive mindset can lead to a fulfilling life, regardless of the obstacles we face.
